Conduct and behavior are closely associated to learning. An effective instructional program requires a wholesome and orderly school environment. Each student is expected to adhere to the rules of conduct and submit to corrective, action taken as a result of conduct violations. Staff are expected to teach students of the school’s expectations, and the consequences for violating the school’s code of conduct.
Each school shall have a discipline plan designed to help student learn and follow the rules, meet behavioral expectations, and assist in creating a positive and supportive learning environment. Disciplinary actions taken by staff should primarily be designed to assist students in improving their conduct. Corrective action and/or punishment for misconduct must reflect good faith effort on the part of the staff. The methods employed in enforcing the rules of the school involve professional judgment. Such judgment should be:
Consistent from day to day and student to student
Balanced against the severity of the misconduct
Appropriate to the student’s nature and prior behavior,
Fair to the student, parent, and others, and
Effective.
Since these criteria may be in conflict, established procedures must be followed in correcting misbehavior. Appeal procedures have been established in order to provide for an opportunity for every corrective action or punishment to be reviewed by someone in authority.
The student is responsible as a citizen to observe the laws of the United States, the state of Washington, and/or its subdivisions. While in the school, the student shall respect the rights of others. Students who involve themselves in criminal acts on school property, off school property at school-supervised events, or off school property — and which acts have a detrimental effect upon the maintenance and operation of the schools or the district — are subject to disciplinary action by the school and prosecution under the law.
Compliance With Rules
Students are expected to:
A. Conform to reasonable standards of acceptable behavior,
B. Respect the rights, person and property of others;
C. Preserve the degree of order necessary for a positive climate for learning; and
D. Submit to the authority of staff and respond accordingly.
The rules shall be enforced by school officials:
On the school grounds during and immediately before or immediately after school hours,
On the school grounds at any other time when the school is being used by a school group(s),
Off the school grounds at a school activity, function, or event, or
Off the school grounds if the actions of the student materially or substantially effect the educational process.
