Music, Music, Music!

Did you know that North Mason School District provides extraordinary music program opportunities for 1,336 of our students?  During winter break, these students marched and played in the Tree Lighting Parade in Belfair.  It was an amazing turnout of community members who attended to hear the choirs, the marimba band, the Hawkins Middle School Band and the North Mason High School Band.  If you missed it, you missed an inspirational performance.

Our North Mason music educators Adele Layton-Berg, Don Connell, Stan Yantis and Chris Drewry are to be commended for their time and efforts to teach our students the joy and the value of music.

Research according to Save the Music the Foundation, a 501c3 nonprofit organization dedicated to raising awareness about the importance of music as part of each child’s complete education, has proven that access to a quality music education provides substantial benefits:

  • Engages students in the classroom and increases graduation rates;
  • Improves early cognitive development, math and reading skills;
  • Enhances learning in other core subjects;
  • Develops critical thinking and leadership skills;
  • Fosters self-esteem and the ability to work cooperatively in teams.

Our K-12 team of fabulous music educators has obviously incorporated those values in their instruction.

There are many opportunities throughout the school year for community members and parents to attend music performances at every level.  Watch for those announcements in the school bulletins or check out the school calendars online (nmsd.wednet.edu).  These are special times for the students to show you what they have learned and will be special times for you as well!
