CIVICS AND ECONOMICS
PREREQUISITE: None
FULFILLS: Social Studies graduation requirement beginning with the class of 2007
GRADE LEVEL: 9

The purpose of this course is to engage students in the basic foundations of economics, civics and citizenship. Students will discover how economic principles and decisions affect people in their daily lives. they will also explore how values and ideals shape different forms of government, and how these various types of government work. Lastly, students will develop an awareness of the roles citizens play within a governmental system.

PACIFIC NORTHWEST HISTORY/GOVERNMENT
PREREQUISITE: None
GRADE LEVEL: 9-12
FULFILLS: Social Studies graduation requirement

Pacific Northwest History traces the evolution of Washington, Oregon and Idaho, with emphasis on Washington. We begin with a summary of our geologic history as well as the types of natural vegetation and why we get the weather we do. We will be learning about the first inhabitants of the Northwest, the Native American, as well as the modern exploration and settlement of our region. We will end the course with regional geography, our political history and what we might expect in the future.


20TH CENTURY WORLD HISTORY/GEOGRAPHY
PREREQUISITE: None
GRADE LEVEL: 10
FULFILLS: Social Studies graduation requirement

The course surveys major world events and trends of the late 19th and 20th centuries. Topics include: World War I and communism; the Great Depression; fascism and World War II; the Cold War and recent history. A persuasive essay is required for course credit. The geography component asks students to draw maps of the world to learn location, physical features and other key geographic skills.

This course is designed for sophomores wanting an in-depth history course. (See the course description for 20th Century World History/Geography for specific topics covered.) Students who are college-bound and/or who want a challenging course that will prepare them for such options as Running Start, AP course, and college should take this honors course.

U.S. HISTORY
PREREQUISITE: None
GRADE LEVEL: 11
FULFILLS: Social Studies graduation requirement

U.S. History is a study of events in the U.S. from the Civil War to the end of World War II. You will be presented with information in the following areas: Civil War - Industrialization - World War I - The Roaring 20's and the Great Depression - World War II. You will be guided through all these eras and the events that caused them, the effect they had on the United States and other countries involved, and the aftermath. Included with this course is a Junior Paper requirement. All students are required to write a series of papers or products on topics related to U.S. history that involve research, persuasive essay and creative writing skills.

CURRENT WORLD PROBLEMS--(CWP)
PREREQUISITE: None
GRADE LEVEL: 12
FULFILLS: Social Studies graduation requirement

Current World Problems is an exciting mixture of current events, government and personal economics. Current events will be an ongoing investigation of events in the world and how they impact your life. In the government portion you will investigate the origins of our country's democracy; in economics, you will learn general economic concepts. There will be time devoted to assist senior in preparing the completed components of hte Culminating Project.

ADVANCED PLACEMENT U.S. HISTORY
PREREQUISITE: Social Studies Dept. recommendaiton
GRADE LEVEL: 11-12
FULFILLS: Social Studies graduation requirement, plus 1 elective credit (A  two term commitment)

Advanced Placement U.S. History is a very challenging course for those interested in the history of our nation or for those who would like the opportunity to earn college credit in U.S. History by scoring high enough on a nationwide exam. You will be learning about the development of the U.S. into a great nation from colonization through the modern era. Course may be taught online.

AP U.S. GOVERNMENT
PREREQUISITE: Social Studies
Department recommendation
FULFILLS: Social Studies graduation requirement, plus 1 elective credit  (a two term commitment)
GRADE LEVEL: 11-12

AP U.S. Government is a very challenging course for those interested in the government and politics of our country or for those who would like to earn college credit in U.S. Government by scoring high enough on a nationwide exam. We will be learning about the structure and functions of our government, past and present. The course may be taught online.
