Physical Education


Physical Education courses are divided in to three levels:

Level 1: Health and Fitness must be taken before enrolling in any Level 2 or Level 3 courses. Level 1 curriculum includes the basics of personal health, and the opportunity to learn how to develop and maintain personal fitness.

Level 2: Body Shaping, Basic Weight Training and Gym Sports. Level 2 includes some additional health concepts and the opportunity to apply personal fitness techniques.

Level 3: Advanced Weight Training, Individual Sports and Team Sports and Introduction to Dance.

Because students are limited to four classes each term, they are not allowed to enroll in more than one physical education class per term.

Students will have the opportunity to make up excused absences. Up to 3 days may be made up by completing written projects. In addition, students may make up a maximum of 5 days by attending classes after school. These classes will meet during the last week of the term.


HEALTH & FITNESS I-LEVEL 1
PREREQUISITE: None
FULFILLS: PE graduation requirement
GRADE LEVELS: 9-12

This course will provide an overview for the beginning high school student introducing the fundamentals of physical fitness. Students will develop personal fitness plans and participate in the ìPower of Oneî project in addition to fitness testing. Instruction will also include areas of nutrition, leadership skills, communication skills, goal setting, first aid, consumer health, human development and sexuality education. Students upon completion of the course will receive one credit towards graduation.

HEALTH & FITNESS II-LEVEL 1
PREREQUISITE: Health & Fitness I
FULFILLS: PE Graduation requirement
GRADE LEVEL:9-10

Health and Fitness II is a level one course which is required prior to taking other physical education classes within the PE Department. Health and Fitness II is a survey course covering basis of developing a personal fitness program in the areas of fitness, nutrition and mental/social wellness. Expectations are that the student will be alternating days between the classroom for concepts and the gym for physical activity. Students will be required to submit a "Fit for Life" project for this course outlining and tracking their personal fitness goals. Students will be tracking their fitness progress through the use of the fitness program, and be evaluated using Washington State's classroom based assessments.


BASIC WEIGHT TRAINING-LEVEL 2
PREREQUISITE: Health & Fitness
FULFILLS: PE graduation requirement GRADE LEVELS: 9-12

This course is for students who wish to start a weight training program. No previous experience is necessary. Three days a week will be devoted to lifting, one day to power training and one day of fun through a sport. Students will learn the basics of weight training, nutrition, and other training principles. All students will be required to write an in depth research paper related to fitness training. 

BODY SHAPING-LEVEL 2
PREREQUISITE: Health & Fitness
FULFILLS: PE graduation requirement
GRADE LEVELS: 10-12

This course will be a  more through exploration of physical fitness. Students will spend the term developing personal fitness programs towards a lifelong goal of increased personal fitness.

GYM SPORTS-LEVEL 2
PREREQUISITE: Health & Fitness
FULFILLS: PE graduation requirement
GRADE LEVELS: 10-12

This course is intended for male and female students who wish ot improve skills in basketball and volleyball, take part in intense strength and conditioning programs and increase flexibility and agility. The class will focus on individual skill development through sport-specific drills and games. It will include a running program, weight lifting, plyometrics, goal setting and assessment.

ADVANCED WEIGHT TRAINING-LEVEL 3
PREREQUISITE: Health & Fitness and completion of a Level 2 course
FULFILLS: PE graduation requirement
GRADE LEVELS: 10-12

This course is for students who wish to excel in physical conditioning and are ready for hard work. The main emphasis will be on Weight Training with the off days to include Plyometric Training, Agility Training, some Aerobic Training and fun activities. Each student will be required to research and write on a variety of subject matter related to the course.


INDIVIDUAL SPORTS-LEVEL 3
PREREQUISITE: Health & Fitness and completion of a Level 2 course
FULFILLS: PE graduation requirement
GRADE LEVELS: 10-12

Students will participate in a variety of individual and net sports. Students will also engage in light conditioning and strength improvement activities. Activities may include tennis, pickle ball, badminton and volleyball.

TEAM SPORTS-LEVEL 3
PREREQUISITE: Health & Fitness and completion of a Level 2 course
FULFILLS: PE graduation requirement
GRADE LEVELS: 10-12

Students will participate in a variety of team sports. Students will also engage in light conditioning and strength improvement activities. Activities may include basketball, volleyball, team handball, softball, ultimate Frisbee, flag football, soccer and speed-away.

INTRODUCTION TO DANCE-LEVEL 3
PREREQUISITE: Health & Fitness and completion of a Level 2 course
FULFILLS: Fine Arts or Level 3 PE graduation requirement
GRADE LEVELS: 10-12

Stretch out those muscles and tickle those toes in a course designed for anyone who is interested in dance and
having fun. Learn the fancy footwork of dance technique - everything from ballet to country western swing, modern jazz to disco! We'll tap our toes to the beat of them all and spotlight our talent in a grand finale performance.
