The foreign language teachers and counselors highly recommend that all students planning to register for and complete foreign language plan in advance to register for two consecutive terms of language instruction. Our experience has demonstrated that students will be much more successful when they take courses consecutively. More advanced language classes can be completed as the student desires.
GERMAN I
PREREQUISITE: Freshmen need a "B" or better in English to take this class. For upper classmen, a "C" average or better in English is recommended.
GRADE LEVELS: 9-12
FULFILLS: Elective graduation requirement
Through study of the language, games, cultural activities, and singing, students will learn to deal with everyday situations using the German language. It will be non-threatening and we're going to do it in German only. The emphasis will be listening and speaking with some written work. This class (or its like) is required for participation in the German Exchange Program.
GERMAN II
PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of German I with a "C" or better
GRADE LEVELS: 9-12
FULFILLS: Elective graduation requirement
Building upon work in German I, students will use games, singing, presentations, reading and writing to practice the language. German will be the primary language for communication in the classroom. We will work through more complex grammatical ideas. The emphasis will be more evenly divided between listening, speaking and written work.
GERMAN III
PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of German II
GRADE LEVELS: 10-12
FULFILLS: Elective graduation requirement
This class will increase the students' ability to deal with German in more complex situations. We will do this by listening, speaking, writing, and reading materials. German will be the means of accomplishing these goals. Students will be evaluated in part on their willingness to use German in the process.
GERMAN IV
PREREQUISITE: German III
FULFILLS: Elective graduation requirement
Students will read a lot of smaller literary works and one larger work, Emil and die Detektive, and will discuss them in class. They will also be learning more complex language patterns in order to create several projects in German which have to do with Germanic culture and history. They will be evaluated in part on their willingness to use German as the means to do these tasks.
GERMAN V
PREREQUISITE: German IV
GRADE LEVELS: 11-12
FULFILLS: Elective graduation requirement
Students will be working independently on projects which he or she and the instructor determine to be useful and interesting for furthering the student's knowledge of German language and culture. All work will be done in German.
SPANISH I

This course is an introduction to the Spanish language and its peoples. Strong emphasis will be given to speaking and understanding conversational Spanish. Reading and writing in Spanish will reinforce the learning. Goals include acquiring the ability to carry on guided conversations and to write on limited subjects in the Spanish language.
SPANISH II
PREREQUISITE: Minimum C or better in Spanish I
GRADE LEVELS: 9-12
FULFILLS: Elective graduation requirement
This course is an in-depth review of Spanish I plus the introduction of additional common grammatical structures. Spanish II students will be able to read, write, understand, and talk about everyday topics in Spanish.
SPANISH III
PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of Spanish II
GRADE LEVELS: 10-12
FULFILLS: Elective graduation requirement
This class is intended for the student who would like to be able to use the language outside the classroom. We will continue to study language structure and vocabulary essential for effectively communicating in Spanish. Students will be evaluated in part on their willingness and ability to use Spanish for communication in the classroom and out.
SPANISH IV,V, VI
PREREQUISITE: Successful completion of Spanish III
GRADE LEVELS: 10-12 FULFILLS: Elective graduation requirement
Emphasis will be on reading, writing, and speaking Spanish using published works by native Spanish writers. We will continue to review and study Spanish grammar and syntax. Students will work in small groups and independently on projects determined to be useful and interesting to further their knowledge and understanding of the Spanish language and its various cultures.
AP SPANISH
PREREQUISITE: Foreign Language department recommendation.
FULFILLS: Elective graduation requirement; can also be used to obtain college credit in Spanish through the AP test.
GRADE LEVELS: 11-12
Emphasis will be on preparing for the AP examination. The student will continue to learn new grammar and vocabulary while improving, reading, writing, speaking , and comprehension skills.
