ENGLISH COURSE OFFERINGS
Each English course will expand the student's literature and composition experience and will meet the core requirements for baccalaureate university admission. All freshmen are required to successfully complete English 1. English 2 may be taken in Term 2 of 9th grade or Term 1 of 10th grade. Students in grades 10-12 may choose from any of the other English offerings to satisfy the remaining 2 credits required, provided they can meet the prerequisites. Students may select additional English courses as electives and are encouraged to do so. (With the exception of English 1 and 2, if two English classes are taken in the same year, the second class is considered an elective credit.)
ADVANCED DEBATE/ANALYSIS PREREQUISITE: DEBATE/ANALYSIS with a grade of B– or instructor approval

If you enjoyed Debate/Analysis and are looking for a new challenge, Advanced Debate/Analysis is for you! This class will focus on learning and engaging in several debate formats, researching and analyzing various media material, and refining public speaking skills. The learning model will be inquiry based and the subject matter student driven. Course work will include class discussions, formal debates, editorial writing, persuasive speeches and a research paper.
ADVANCED PLACEMENT LANGUAGE and COMPOSITION PREREQUISITE: English 1 and 2, successful completion of other English classes.

The College Board offers a written test each May to an international clientele of high school English students who have "done college level work in high school." This course aims to prepare you for that test. The course content focuses primarily on the reading, evaluation, and analysis of nonfiction texts. A wide range of articles, essays, biographical writings, and scientific and historical writings will be used. Students will develop and hone their reading, analysis, and writing skills. This course is for the dedicated college-and professionally-bound student.
AMERICAN CULTURAL LITERATURE

American Cultural literature explores the rich and varied cultural threads that make up the tapestry of America. Cajun Zydeco, chow mein, Mardi Gras Indians, Cinco de mayo--what do they have in common? they're all expressions from unique American cultures that are influenced from places outside the United States, but you won't find Cajuns in France, chow mein in China, traditional Native Americans celebrating mardi gras, or much recognition of Cinco de Mayo in Mexico. Reading fiction and nonfiction such as the Chosen by Chaim Potak and the woman Warrior (also known as Mulan) by Maxine Hong Kingston may help us understand why religious ethnic, and racial differences in this country create both problems and strengths. These many different American experience stories are great literature! in addition, we'll do some activities exploring our diverse heritage and experiences.
BIBLE AS LITERATURE

The Bible is not only a book of faith. In this class we will focus on the literature part of the Bible. We will read through the various parts of the Bible and talk about them as stories, poetry, speeches, etc., as pieces of literature.
BRITISH LITERATURE

British literature in the 19th century was very influential in Europe and the Americas. Writers such as Dickens, Eliot, Wordsworth, Coleridge, Austen, and the Bronte sisters moved literature into new styles and sensibilities. Then in the 20th century writers like Henry James, T.S. Eliot, Virginia Woolf, and James Joyce changed the face and tone of literature for the entire century. Reading works by many of these authors and analyzing the forces literature creates and is created by will give new insight into the human condition: love, war, making order out of chaos, death, and faith.
BUSINESS COMMUNICATIONS
PREREQUISITE: English 1 & 2 and keyboarding skills

CREATIVE WRITING PREREQUISITE: English 1 & 2

This course explores a variety of genres and methods of written expression. Some of these include writing exercises, short stories, personal narratives, poetry, dramatic works and journaling. As aspiring writers we will focus on the creative process, from mere ideas to concrete, finished, polished pieces of writing. In addition to a research paper, the final project will consist of submitting a piece of your work for potential publication.
DEBATE / ANALYSIS
PREREQUISITE: English 1 & 2

GRADE LEVELS: 10-12
Like to argue? Have an opinion about everything? Debate/Analysis could be for you! This class will help you develop and hone your vocabulary, writing, public speaking and critical thinking skills. Coursework will include class discussions, formal debates, reflective essays, and a substantial persuasive research paper. The curriculum emphasizes student cooperation and collaboration, development of analytical skills, and examination of contemporary social and political issues
ENGLISH 1 & 2 (Two Terms)
Prerequisite: Required of all 9th grade students

English 1 & 2 are courses that focus on the study of composition, grammar, mechanics, literature comprehension and interpretation skills, study skills, public speaking and listening skills, problem solving, group interaction , library skills, and spelling and vocabulary development. This course will improve students' communication skills for use in other high school courses and life in general.
ENGLISH WASL SKILLS
PREREQUISITE: You need to have taken the WASL at least once before.
FULFILLS: Elective graduation requirement
GRADE:11-12
Students will learn the reading and writing skills needed to pass the Washington Assessment of Student Learning (WASL) on a retake. Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI). This course is limited to students who did not meet the WASL benchmark in reading or writing on their first attempt, or on the summer retake opportunity. This is a one term course for credit.
INTRODUCTION TO THE SHORT STORY PREREQUISITE: English 1 & 2

For students who love to read, this course in short fiction is designed for you. We will study works developed in America and abroad, looking at individual writers, literary movements, and cultures. You will further your understanding of elements of ficiton and develop these elements in writing through regular course work and individual projects.
MYTHOLOGY
PREREQUISITE: English 1 & 2

What is a myth? What were some of the myths of other peoples? How do they reflect their world view? How do they affect our world today? These are some of the questions which we will be answering. The process will include reading, discussion, and analysis of stories from various cultures. Students will select one of these groups and research that culture's myths, publishing their own collection of myths and analyses. We will look at modern America and discuss and analyze its myths, with an eye to either cataloging some of its myths and/or creating a mythology of our own.
POWER ENGLISH
PREREQUISITE: English 1 & 2

Communicating with power on the job, at school, and with friends may lead to high pay, improved grades, and increased strengthened. Power English will show
you how to write and speak with clarity.
THE GREAT OUTDOORS: NATURE LITERATURE

We exist in a complex relationship with the natural environment. Writers throughout history have praised nature's beauty and power as a source of renewal and inspiration. Adventurers and scientists continue to explore our natural world. Humans are ceaselessly attempting to harness or conquer the forces of nature. In addition, many modern writers caution us to be sensitive to the delicate balance that must be maintained for all of us to continue to survive. We will read fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and complete a research project relating to these themes. If you enjoy the great outdoors this is the English course for you.
