- DRIVER EDUCATION
PREREQUISITE: 15 years old by the first day of class. The class fee must be paid prior to admittance to class. Students earn 1/2 credit for this class that is held after school.
FULFILLS: .5 Elective graduation
requirement.
FEE REQUIRED (Currently $375)
Traffic Safety is a two-phase program of classroom and laboratory instruction designed to develop responsible citizens who are safe drivers, knowledgeable and competent in making correct and accident-preventing decisions.
- ENTREPRENEURSHIP

Students gain an understanding of the marketing and management principles necessary to start and operate their own business. They will develop an awareness of the opportunities for small business ownership and develop the planning skills needed to start a company. Entrepreneurship is designed for students enrolled in marketing, and/or other courses, who have an interest in developing the skill, attitudes, and knowledge necessary for successful entrepreneurs. Students enrolled in Entrepreneurship are strongly encouraged to participate and compete in DECA (an association of marketing students).
- FOOD, NUTRITION AND WELLNESS

This exploratory course examines the relationship between what you eat, how you prepare it, regular exercise and your level of wellness. The emphasis will be on building habits and making choices for a lifetime of good health. Students will participate in cooking labs to prepare of wide variety of foods. Other topics will include food safety, nutrition, popular diets, cultural influences, and consumer aspects of food choices as well as careers related to this area. Students should be prepared to do some walking during class several days each week.

For elected officers of the ASB and others with instructor approval, this class is the student government which makes decisions about ASB matters according to the ASB Constitution.
- MARKETING 1
PREREQUISITE: None

Students will learn concepts about entry-level business and marketing functions. Topics include marketing and business fundamentals, selling, financing, product-service planning, information management, purchasing, distribution, pricing, promotion, risk management, career development, human relations, marketing math, and marketing operations. Students enrolled in Marketing I are strongly encouraged to participate and compete in DECA (and association of marketing students).
- MARKETING II
PREREQUISITE: MARKETING 1 OR ENTREPRENEURSHIP

GRADE LEVELS: 9-12
Students will explore several careers in marketing and business. Students will develop an understanding of the following career pathways: Sports and Entertainment Marketing, Travel and Tourism, Hospitality Services Marketing, Retail Merchandising, Apparel and Accessories Marketing, Food marketing, and Restaurant Management. Students enrolled in marketing II will complete a DECA manual. Students enrolled in Marketing I are strongly encouraged to participate and compete in DECA (and association of marketing students).
- NEWSPAPER
PREREQUISITE: Recommended B Average in English
FULFILLS: Elective credit
GRADE LEVELS: 9-12
Students will learn all aspects of newspaper production. This includes learning to write in a journalistic style, doing page layout and design, gathering advertising and assembling the paper "camera ready." A strong emphasis is placed on the use of the computer (word processing and desktop publishing).

The goal of this course is to help students with diverse educational needs to be successful. Students will develop interpersonal skills and take pride in assisting others. Tutors will learn and teach effective strategies to help other students be successful in school, including such things as note-taking, organization, studying for tests, and effective communication. Students must possess the ability and willingness to help others and communicate with teachers and parents. Excellent attendance is mandatory as students and teachers will be counting on your regular assistance.

This exploratory basic life skills course will help you manage your life, now and in the future so you can do more than merely survive; you will thrive! Are you ready to learn to cook more than Top Ramen? Would you like help in dealing with young children you baby-sit? How can you get the most for your money? Would you like to explore your creative side by making a simple sewing machine project? How about exploring ways to improve relationships with others? Do you need help balancing all of the pieces of your life? If you have answered yes to any of these questions, this is the class for you! Students will have the opportunity to develop these skills and more through a variety of activities, projects and labs. Leadership skills will be emphasized.

“Why did I do that?” “What makes people’s personalities distinct from each other?” “What’s an ego?” “How can people be so cruel or wonderful to each other?” “Why do my friend and I learn so differently?” “Am I normal?” The answers to all of these questions and many more lie in the field of psychology, the study of the mind. People have tried to explain thought and behavior for thousands of years. This introductory course will focus on several aspects of psychology, including theories of psychology, research methods, education, personality, behavior, and mental disorders. The course will be challenging, with required reading, plenty of daily work, discussion and presentations, and independent research. For course credit, students must complete all the steps of a research project and presentation on a topic in psychology that they select.

Sociology is the study of the individuals, groups and institutions that make up human society-of-people and their relations with each other. "Why am I like my friends?" "How are my parents different from me?" "How are my parents similar to me?" "What is normal?" "Why are some people not normal?" "Why does crime exist?" "Why does poverty exist, and how can it be reduced?" "Are different races more the same or distinct?"
These and others are questions that sociology can help to answer. The content includes the history and methods used by sociologists, conformity, social structure, adolescents and adults, deviance and social control, social levels, gender, race, the family, mass media, and more. Expect rigorous work, with tough reading, plenty of daily work, tests, presentations, and projects that do "real sociology" by surveys, observations, and data collection. A research-based writing project or presentation will be an essential requirement for course credit.
- STORE OPERATIONS

This is a hands-on class, where students gain and utilize skills to operate and manage a small retail business--NMHS' student store, the "Dawg Pound". Students develop transferable skills, including analyzing and selecting products, ordering merchandise, scheduling product deliveries, constructing displays, checking incoming stork, verifying a cash drawer, balancing a cash drawer at the end of a sales shift, developing store promotions, and exploring store layout considerations. Students enrolled in Store Operations are strongly encouraged to participat and compete in DECA (an association of marketing students.)

Students, who are self-motivated, mature an confidential, who demonstrate initiative and have regular attendance will be considered for an assistant position on campus. Students learn through experience and required activities the skills necessary to obtain and retain employment and increase career awareness.

- WORK-SITE LEARNING
PREREQUISITE: Do you want to get a jump start on your career and earn high school credit at the same time? Students may earn high school credit for eligible employment if they meet the following prerequisites.
*Has met the majority of high school completion requirements
*Has completed a related Career and Technical Education course the term immediately preceding (or is taking it concurrently)
*Is employed in a paid, or an unpaid job that complies with all child labor laws and is related to the student’s career goals.
*Is approved by the Work-Based Learning Coordinator and school counselor
*Completes a Work-Based Learning Training Agreement

Students may earn high school credit if employed in paid or unpaid jobs off campus. Students participating in Work-Site learning experiences will have the opportunity to gain valuable work skills,
attitudes, and connections to employers in the community as well as earn elective high school credit. Grading for this course is on a Pass/Fail basis. The “Failing” grade affects a student’s grade point average. A student’s progress is evaluated weekly for eligibility. Students may earn a maximum of three credits in Work-Site Learning. To earn credit, students are required to:
*Attend regularly scheduled seminars on campus
*Complete state-required paperwork
*Participate in career-related projects and field trips or job shadows. Parent/guardian may need to provide transportation to field trips or job shadow activities.
- YEARBOOK
PREREQUISITE: Keyboarding, English 9 or English 9A & 9B, either Art I or Photography I, and letter of recommendation from staff member. Instructor approval required.
GRADE LEVELS: 9-12
Interested in becoming a part of the yearbook staff? Make sure you're up for the challenge! Yearbook is a class that involves much time and dedication. This is NOT A PHOTOGRAPHY CLASS; the photos for yearbook are provided by the photography staff. Yearbook students first receive training on the computer with "PageMaker" software. Then, they learn page design and copy writing. Because we are responsible for compiling and producing the school's "memories" each year, the yearbook class is run as a business. Students are graded on their organization skills, daily work ethic, dedication to producing quality work, attendance, and meeting deadlines. Ad selling, fundraising, and marketing are also yearbook commitments which may require some after-school time..
