What are Collaboration/Early Release Days?
Students are released on Mondays 80 minutes earlier then their normal dismissal time so that teams of teachers have a consistent time in which to work together on improving instruction, curriculum and assessment of students. In order to compensate for this instructional time, the school year was lengthened by two full school days and daily school schedules were lengthened so that students actually ended up gaining instructional time throughout the school year.
To help illustrate how teachers are utilizing the early release time we are attaching many samples of journals that we ask all teacher teams to utilize when meeting. These journals are made available to all staff so that they are aware of what the different teams are working on and can benefit from the collective work.
Examples of the topics of discussion during the collaboration time to date are:
- Literacy scope and sequence (S & S). The S&S provides a means of ensuring that essential literacy elements and vocabulary are covered throughout the year.
- Middle School/High School criteria for Algebra.
- LAP funding issue with General Math.
- WASL scores 395 or higher, classroom application.
- High School & Beyond Plan
- 9th grade checklist & portfolio set ups
- Graduation requirements
