Sand Hill Teaches SMART students

As a part of a building wide character education program, Sand Hill is teaching students SMART self management strategies:

S – Stay SMART
  • I am able to control myself
  • I stay on task

M – Move quietly

  • I move quietly around my classroom at appropriate times
  • I move without disturbing others
  • I move safely and quietly through hallways

A – Always do my best

  • I do what I am expected to do
  • I give my best effort
  • I continue to try even when it is difficult

R – Respect others

  • I use kind and courteous words
  • I use good manners obey the rules and those in authority
  • I take care of other people’s property
  • I listen to the ideas of other people

T – Think before I act

  • I take time to think before I act
  • I choose to express my anger in positive ways
Students "caught" being SMART are given a small slip of paper with the above SMART logo on it, add their own and their teacher's names on the back, and bring to the office, where there is a bucket for K/1/2 tickets and one for 3/4/5 tickets.  About twice a month, a random drawing is made from the two buckets full of SMART tickets.  Students whose names are drawn receive a SMART Squiggle Pen and a popcorn coupon.  Also, at the end of every month teachers are asked to identify the student in their class who most exemplifies the SMART characteristics, and those students receive the above "prizes", a SMART static cling, a SMART Certificate, have their names posted in the PawPrints, and have their picture posted in the front hallway!
